Research

The institute concentrates on the modelling of complex materials as well as on the efficient numerical simulation of practically relevant problems. Another research field are innovative numerical methods, e.g. in the areas of finite element technology, model reduction and phase field simulation. The focus of the experimental branch of research lies on the multiaxial mechanical behaviour of soft materials (e.g. biomaterials) but also metals.

The institute does research on the following topics:

Mechanics is today a strongly interdisciplinary research field that shows besides the strong link to civil engineering (see e.g. the modelling of asphalt or concrete) a direct connection to mechanical engineering, material science as well as the fields medical technology and medicine. In mechanical engineering and material science the simulation of complex material behaviour and innovative production processes plays an important role. In medical technology mechanical modelling is utilized to develop new designs of implants and to simulate its functionality in the human body.

The question arises as to how and why a civil engineer comes to such topics. The notion "civil engineering" gives already a good answer. We look at engineering problems of civil life which certainly includes the tasks described above. Additionally, the study program of civil engineering teaches more than any other study program the feeling for force and deformation. This competence is not only needed for the calculation of buildings but also in the computer-oriented simulation of biomechanical processes. Finally, our working environment develops more and more the demand for a frequent change of working fields. A dissertation in mechanics opens up many ways of professional life which reach from the classical engineer in civil and mechanical engineering or a well paid but stressful management position to a professorship. Not only for this reason masters or postdocs with a focus on mechanics have also in economical crises good or even very good chances on the job market.
